What Shoes Should I Wear?
If you're planning an adventure session in Washington, one of the first questions you may have is: "What shoes should I wear?"
Whether we're exploring the beaches of the Olympic Peninsula, hiking through the North Cascades, wandering around Artist Point, or chasing sunset in Snohomish County, the answer is almost always the same:
Bring two pairs of shoes.
Washington's most beautiful locations aren't always a few steps from the parking lot. Many adventure sessions include walking along forest trails, rocky shorelines, mountain paths, or uneven terrain.
For that reason, I always recommend wearing supportive shoes while we're hiking to your photo location. Depending on where we're going, that might mean:
- Hiking boots
- Trail shoes
- Comfortable sneakers
- Supportive walking shoes
Protecting your feet and ankles means you'll enjoy the experience much more—and you'll have the energy to focus on making memories instead of worrying about sore feet. Ask me how I know! As your photographer, I wear my favorite Hoka's (not sponsored!) to almost every session. I have my walking Hoka's and then my hiking Hoka Kaha 2 GTX (they have updated versions now).
When Can I Change Into the Shoes I Love?
Once we've arrived at our destination, it's time to change into the shoes that complete your outfit.
One of my favorite things about adventure sessions is blending elegance with the outdoors. Some beautiful options include:
- Leather Chelsea boots
- Western boots
- Dress shoes
- Classic loafers
- Clean white sneakers
- A gorgeous pair of heels
Yes—even heels belong in the mountains and I love highlighting those in the details alongside your hiking boots.
The contrast between sophisticated clothing and Washington's rugged landscapes creates timeless photographs that feel both adventurous and refined.
Why Should I Bring 2 Pairs of Shoes?
The goal is simple:
Wear practical shoes for the journey.
Wear your favorite shoes for the photographs.
Changing shoes only takes a minute, but it helps keep you safe while still giving you the look you've always envisioned.
I've photographed couples, seniors, and families throughout Washington, and this is one of the easiest ways to make your adventure session more comfortable from beginning to end. And, I'll photograph the in-between moments of your two best shoes side by side. I believe documenting every part of the journey is important so when you look back on this season of life, it brings back the feelings of exactly how you remember it.
